Commentary and Reflections on Ḥadīth #5896 from al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr: “In my ummah, Zubayr is my maternal nephew and devout supporter.”
Ḥadīth #5896
الزُّبَيْرُ ابنُ عَمَّتِي وَحَوَارِيَّي مِنْ أُمَّتي
“In my ummah, Zubayr is my maternal nephew and devout supporter.”
Commentary & Reflections
In this narration, the Prophet (upon him be peace) is referring to Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām who is one of the ten promised Paradise. The word used, “ḥawāryī,” is for one’s close companion who provides enduring aid and support. In his commentary, Munāwī explained the word through another, namely: “Nāṣir.” The Prophet (upon him be peace) had many companions, and Zubayr was specifically mentioned because of his many virtues. The extent to which he went while supporting the Prophet’s mission surpassed many others. All the Companions are the Prophets’ “Anṣār,” which is the plural form of the word nāṣir. And Zubayr is one of the most exceptional from amongst them.
