A Pearl of Wisdom From Ibn Masʿūd

In the Qurʾān, Allāh says:

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى

“But as one who fears his Lord’s presence, and guards himself against whim.”[1]

From Ibn Masʿūd commentated on the verse:

أنتم في زمان يقود الحق الهوى وسيأتي زمان يقود الهوى الحق فنعوذ باللّٰه من ذلك الزمان

“You are in a time when the truth restrains whim. Soon, a time will come when whim restrains the truth. We seek Allāh’s protection from that time.”[2]
