ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The importance of pursuing Islāmic knowledge continues throughout all stages of one’s life. After fulfilling the obligations of worship and the need to seek sustenance, one should participate in studying Islām as much as they are able. The Tafhīm program focuses on providing educational opportunities for eager learners of all ages on a part-time basis.
Every Muslim must know the material covered in these courses. By attending Tafhīm, one will acquire their farḍ al-ʿayn knowledge; in addition, through introductory lessons in some of the most fundamental Islāmic subjects, one will gain a familiarity with classical scholarship. Islāmic theology, law, and spirituality are focused on in the program.
Join at any time and learn at your own pace
This program consists of eight 16-week semesters, each of which includes three courses. The subjects covered vary between Islamic law (fiqh), theology (aqidah), prophetic biography (sirah), and more.
DarusSalam offers separate Saturday and Sunday tracks to accommodate the schedules of working students. Each track completes the entire curriculum in eight consecutive semesters. Students enrolled in both Saturday and Sunday tracks can complete the entire curriculum in just four consecutive semesters (two years) of study.
The Tafhim program is unique in that none of the courses have prerequisites. This means that you may join the program at the beginning of any semester and continue for four years to complete the curriculum. Students may enroll in as many or as few classes per semester as they desire.

The Fiqh of Sawm, Zakah, and Hajj
On the importance of sacred knowledge, Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Indeed, knowledge commands action. And action is subordinate to knowledge. A deed that is not performed with knowledge, it does not benefit. In fact, it can be a source of harm. Some of the pious predecessors said: ‘One who worships Allāh without knowledge, he will end up corrupting more than he rectifies.’”
Although we may fast, pay charity annually, and perform pilgrimages, all of which are pillars of the faith, many of us are unaware of the rulings specific to these devotions. Gaining knowledge of these acts is imperative. A new Muslim or one who does not have access to a scholar may have an excuse for not studying these topics. However, in this community, there are opportunities that far surpass access to a single scholar. In fact, there are many scholars who have spent countless hours of their lives studying these chapters, and they are ready to share what they have acquired.
This course will cover details on the topics of sawm, zakāh, and ḥajj.

Signs of the Hour
“Verily, Allāh possesses knowledge of the Hour.” (31:34) “The people will ask you regarding the Hour. Say: ‘Only Allāh has knowledge of it.’” (33:63) In our faith, life after death and resurrection are certain realities. And while they are certain, we do not know when they will happen. We do not know when we will die and we do not know when the Hour will come. Only Allāh knows when these will happen. Allāh-in His infinite mercy- revealed various signs to the Prophet (saw) . And he conveyed these to us so that we may look out for and prepare for the coming of the Hour. In this course, one will study the major and the minor signs inshāʾAllāh.

Ulum al-Qur'an
“A perfect Scripture that falsehood cannot touch in any way. A Revelation sent down from the Wise, He who is worthy of all praise.” (Sūrat Fuṣṣilat 41-42) The Qurʾān is our book of Sacred Law. It constitutes one’s manual on how to live by elucidating one’s relationship with the Creator, mankind, and the world at large. For centuries, the role of the Qurʾān was unquestioned; but following the ummah’s decline and the colonial powers’ occupation of the Muslim World, this confidence was shaken and doubts began to arise. We are often faced with the following questions: How do we know that the Qurʾān is from Allāh ? How can we be confident that it was preserved? Are its commandments restricted to the era in which it was revealed or is its message universal? Who is entitled to interpret it? In this class, these questions will be addressed. The topics covered will include, defining the Qurʾān and Revelation, its miraculous nature, the stages of revelation, its compilation and preservation, its script, the modes of recitation, the order of revelation and the Qurʾān’s chapter sequence, the circumstances behind the revelation of verses and chapters, the stylistic and thematic features of the Makkan and the Madinan chapters, the principles of Qurʾānic exegesis, the unambiguous verses and ambiguous verses, abrogation, etc.

The Fiqh of Finance
Throughout Islāmic history, Muslims have governed flourishing economies. Wherever Muslims went, the business practices that they introduced influenced the hearts of many. The business ethics that they exhibited inspired people to see Islām’s beauty. The divine system they brought with them -Islām’s teachings- came from the most perfect legislator: Allāh . By learning Islām’s rulings on trade, one will understand how to conduct business in a way pleasing to Allāh . The financial transactions that contemporary Muslims encounter in their pursuit of livelihood are numerous. Business in the modern world dynamically evolved. When compared to the agrarian economies of old, the modern marketplace is contradistinct in many ways. At the same time, in some ways, it is analogous. One of the most important ways in which it compares is the necessity of learning the rules governing it. This course is designed to acquaint the modern Muslim with knowledge of the rulings and guidelines required to buy and sell in today’s times. Issues such as bank accounts, mortgages, retirement accounts, credit cards, debit cards, forex, and many other interesting topics will be discussed in a series of engaging and informative classes.
