ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The importance of pursuing Islāmic knowledge continues throughout all stages of one’s life. After fulfilling the obligations of worship and the need to seek sustenance, one should participate in studying Islām as much as they are able. The Tafhīm program focuses on providing educational opportunities for eager learners of all ages on a part-time basis.
Every Muslim must know the material covered in these courses. By attending Tafhīm, one will acquire their farḍ al-ʿayn knowledge; in addition, through introductory lessons in some of the most fundamental Islāmic subjects, one will gain a familiarity with classical scholarship. Islāmic theology, law, and spirituality are focused on in the program.
STRUCTURE & SCHEDULE
This program consists of eight 16-week semesters, each of which includes three courses. The subjects covered vary between Islamic law (fiqh), theology (aqidah), prophetic biography (sirah), and more.
DarusSalam offers separate Saturday and Sunday tracks to accommodate the schedules of working students. Those who satisfactorily complete eight consecutive semesters in either track will earn a certificate in four years. Students who wish to enroll in both the Saturday and Sunday tracks simultaneously may earn a certificate in just two consecutive years of studies.
LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE
The Tafhim program is unique in that none of the courses have prerequisites. This means that you may join the program at the beginning of any semester and continue for four years to earn your certificate.

SATURDAY TRACK
▽ Tajwid
Allāh commands, “Recite the Qurʾān with a measured recitation.” (73:4) The objective of tajwīd is to learn to recite the Qurʾān as it was revealed by Allāh swt and recited by the Prophet (saw). One will study the rules on how to correctly recite the Qurʾān. As well, the theoretical rules will be applied by reciting to the instructor. ▽ The Four Rightly Guided Caliphs
The Prophet (saw) said, “Follow my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs after me. Hold on to it firmly.” Many challenges that we face were also confronted by our righteous predecessors. The best example to follow in the face of such challenges is that of the four rightly guided caliphs. In this class, one shall study the biographies of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, and ʿAlī (RA). This study will include their early lives and lineage, their relationship with the Prophet (saw) , their service to Islām, their political achievements, the challenges they faced, and their character and spirituality. One will become acquainted with early Islāmic history. And this will be a source of inspiration and a catalyst for effecting positive change within our lives and the world around us.
Time: 11:10 am - 12:10pm
Instructor: Ml Abdul Ahad Jawaid
▽ The Fiqh of Marriage and Divorce
Marriage is sacred. The Prophet (saw) described it as, “half of one’s religion.” Unfortunately, very few Muslims correctly understand the laws that Islām established dealing with marriage and divorce. Ignorance of these rules has destroyed families, and knowledge of them has saved many more. Problems have abounded within many marriages, and divorce rates have skyrocketed. Amidst this tumult, the example of the Prophet shines as a beacon of guidance. The Prophet demonstrated how to a lead a perfect and fulfilling married life.
This course will examine the guidance that the Prophet lived as a husband and how his blessed wives, the Mothers of the Believers, lived as wives. Students will discover the rights and responsibilities of both the husband and the wife, what constitutes an Islāmic marriage, how divorce works and its implications, how to properly study and understand the role of fiqh in these chapters, etc.
Time: 12:20 pm - 1:20 pm
Instructor: Ml Usman Akhtar
SUNDAY TRACK
▽Heroes of Islam
In Islām, there are certain personalities that stand out from amongst all the rest. In this class, one will study the lives of the ummah’s greatest scholars, generals, saints, and other luminaries, both from Islām’s early years as well as today. By studying the lives of these great Muslims, it is hoped that one will be inspired to achieve greatness in their own life as well. Furthermore, one will realize that Islām was the means to their success.
Time: Jan. 10 - Feb. 21 11:10 AM- 12:10 PM; Feb 28- May 2 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

▽ Misunderstood Verses
Allāh (saw) says, “Will they not ponder on the Qurʾān? If it had been from other than Allāh, they would have found therein much incongruity.” The Qurʾān is the speech of our Creator and our guide in life. It is superlatively eloquent, internally consistent, and nothing short of miraculous. However, in every generation, there have been individuals, some sincere and others with ulterior motives, who misinterpret the Book of Allāh swt and its verses. This class will examine common objections to the Qurʾān as well as some frequently misunderstood verses, whether they stem from the zanādiqah of old or Islamophobes of this era.
Time: Jan. 10 - Feb. 21 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM; Feb 28- May 2 11:10 AM - 12:10 PM
Instructor: Ml Saim Asif
▽Fiqh of Halal & Haram
The Prophet (saw) said, “The unlawful is clearly known and the lawful is clearly known.” In this class, one will study the legal rulings on a variety of issues with a focus on what is unlawful and what is lawful. Things like slaughtering, food, dress, etc., will be discussed in detail.
Time: 12:20 PM - 1:20 PM
Instructor: Sh. Mohammed Siddiq Mohiuddin
